Explore Canol oil pipeline

This Friday Dr. Sinead Earley gave the speech on “Resource Geographies in the Canadian North: The Canol Pipeline and the Shutagot’ine Trail Remediation Project”.  Her speech consists of three parts, an instruction of the Canol pipeline & Road, followed by the Canol Trail Remediation Project and Canol Doc Project.

I got a lot of the new information from her presentation.  Since I am an international student, I do not know well about Canada, her presentation helped to learn more about this country. In the first part of the presentation she introduced the Canol pipeline & Road project. The oil pipeline and the road were built by the United States Army during the World War II. The oil pipeline was only operated for fourteen months before it was abandoned by the American forces when the war ended. However, they did not make any effort to remediate the environmental damage the project had caused. The second part of the presentation is the Canol Trail Remediation Project. This project was conducted to reduce the environmental risk caused by the abandoned pipeline. The third part of the presentation she introduced the Canol Doc Project that she involved in. This project took a group of cyclists and paddlers through the whole abandoned pipeline. They also made a documentary of their trip.

I found that the content of the presentation is interesting. From her presentation I learnt how the oil pipeline damage to the environment and how the methods are taken to reduce the environmental risk. However, I don’t like the present style, because there are not many words on her PPT slides that make me hardly to understand the point she was taking. As a result, I think the presentation could be improved, if she could summarize the main point on each slide of the PPT.

There is not any component of the research that would be applicable to my research. I think she responded well to these questions, also her sense of humor made us laugh. If I have been given the opportunity, the question I would ask is how severe does she think the environment damage were caused by the oil pipeline. To what extent the environmental damage will be repaired due to the Shutagot’ine Trail Remediation Project.
